Making Sleeptime Peaceful For You And Baby
March 8th, 2010
One of the most difficult parts of being a new mom is getting sleep time to be part of a positive and peaceful process. Often it is stressful and women tend to get very over tired and overwhelmed. You can find a lot of advice on the Internet and from other moms and nurses, but you just have to experiment and find a balance that works for you.
Developing a routine with your baby is very important. While some people really like routines, other people have trouble following them – however, it is really worth sticking at it as you will be able to avoid some problems if you do. You should also try to keep your baby calm around bed times and you can plan activities such as a warm bath and quiet snuggles before bub is put to bed. Try not to have too many people nurse the baby as this can be over stimulating for them.
Before you bring your baby home you need to have it set up to facilitate relaxation for your baby and easy use for you. A convertible crib is a great way to get maximum use out of a cot that will work from birth up to when the baby moves onto a bed.
When you are buying your crib try to think long term. Even if you know your baby’s sex already if you are thinking of having more children, then you should not opt for a pink or blue crib. A convertible crib natural colored is probably the most useful option and can be easily used for later babies or to sell.
Once you have the crib all figured out, then you will need to purchase a bedding collection. You will need to have a few spares on hand to cope with the leakages that occur from both ends of babies at times. Having around three sets is ideal – one for use, one to be washed and one in reserve at all times.
Some moms opt for controlled crying to teach their babies to settle themselves and get back to sleep independently. To learn more about it you can talk to your baby nurse or read up on the Internet. Some mothers find this technique too stressful for them as it requires leaving baby to cry by itself for periods of time. If you are feeling like you are not coping due to supreme tiredness, then you should speak to your baby nurse for advice.
Controlled crying is fine if your baby is over six months and get plenty of attention and cuddles throughout the day. You should try to make bedtime a pleasant routine rather than a stressful time of the day.
